We need efficient, dense development to conserve resources like water and energy, to have compact communities that allow us to keep some open spaces, and to create the kind of population interaction that breeds a real sense of community, without which we become a series of gated enclaves, not a group of people working together.

Personally, I'm against the sort of dense development like the high-rises we see going up downtown along the water. To me, they're ruining some of the innocence and small-town, low-key charm of the city. But all of this is a matter of personal opinion.
